James draws on more than 30 years of experience to build relationships between innovative philanthropic investors and visionary organizations in North America, the UK, and Europe. As a successful non-profit leader he has built comprehensive advancement programs for universities, research institutes, medical and scientific organizations, and think tanks resulting in over $500M in new resources. While at the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, James conceived and launched both the Investor Consortium and Tech Consortium to infuse the GRI with $40M in new revenues to support corporate sustainability reporting and became known for his expertise and work in sustainability and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing. As founding vice president of Copia in Napa, California, he worked with Robert Mondavi to create and lead a successful $70M campaign and state bond issue to build a museum and educational center devoted to showcasing the distinctive American contributions to wine, food and the arts. He has managed and grown fundraising at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, UK, the Illinois Institute of Technology, Rice University, Cystic Fibrosis Canada, and for numerous non-profit organizations as a senior consultant with Campbell & Company. He has published articles on philanthropy, corporate social responsibility, technology, and public policy, and delivered presentations in these areas to a variety of international audiences and private clients. His passion for bringing together ideas and resources is reflected in all aspects of his work. He obtained a BA and MA from the University of Houston, a PhD from Rice University, is a former student at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris (Sciences Po) and the University of Strasbourg where he earned a Certificate in French Civilization. He is founder and CEO of Oenovitale Wines Ltd. James is based in Toronto where he lives with his wife, Katherine Murphy, author of the novel, Gentlemen, Gigolos, and Gelato, and their dog, Fanny.
